Situated just beneath the historic beacon (where Jeannie's great-great-grandfather
was born) on the steep clay cliffs of Gay Head, the
inn affords visitors spectacular views of Vineyard Sound and the
Elizabeth Islands. A remote up-island haven, about eighteen miles
from the bustle of the popular down-island towns, the inn is not
just a place people come to for a scenic Vineyard escape, but for
prime pampering as well ... the place is a veritable nature sanctuary;
we had woken to an impassioned chorus of whistling sparrows, finches,
cardinals, sparrows, and red-winged blackbirds, had seen an osprey
perched upon a high nesting pole behind the house, and a rabbit
scampering in and out of the low brush. Under the noble gaze of
the deer, we sipped our coffee and listened to the familiar strains
of a James Taylor tune wafting from the house. It was a morning
of unbeatable Outermost Inn tranquility.

A particular gem among the inns is the Outermost Inn in Aquinnah,
with a remarkable view of the red brick lighthouse and its distinctive
light. It is run by Hugh and Jeannie Taylor, who really do behave
as though they are entertaining old friends. The house, remarkably,
has wonderful views from all the windows and, as in many Island
houses, the windows are not cluttered with curtains. There is only
a view out, in a secluded place, and no view in so curtains are
not only superfluous - they block the view ... this is a place of
serenity in a sloping hillside like a natural arena for nature-watching.

The Outermost Inn is as warm and inviting as Hugh & Jeanne Taylor
themselves...
A few nights there is more like a visit with friends at their beach
house...
Delicious dinners where everything from bread to chocolate is made by
the Taylors' chef...
The Taylors welcome guests to their corner of the Island
known for rolling dunes, watery expanses and beautiful beaches,
but you may never want to leave your room.
